Once basic drawing skills are taught students move on to painting. Before liquid paints are introduced, watercolor crayons as well as oil and dry pastels are used to teach basic color theory. Next, color mixing and application onto canvas and wooden board is taught with acrylic paints. After students show competence with acrylics, oil paints are introduced to further advance color theory, composition and advance paint mixing. Brushes, sponges and pallet knives are all used for paint application. Painting is not limited to two dimensional pieces as many students choose to transfer their painting knowledge to three-dimensional mediums and digital art applications.
